FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Domain Registration
I have my domain registered at another company. Can I get hosting through you?
Yes. The company who provides your domain registration service can set the “authoritative name servers” for your domain to Mercury Network’s DNS servers. This change should be coordinated with a Mercury Network Provisioning Technician to ensure that there is no interruption to your e-mail or web service. Some domain registration service providers give customers the ability to change the authoritative name servers for their domain through a password-protected web site. Mercury Network’s DNS servers are:
| Server |
IP Address |
Location |
| ns1.mercury.net |
64.7.161.12 |
Michigan |
| ns2.mercury.net |
64.7.161.13 |

| ns3.mercury.net |
64.7.172.12 |
Wisconsin |
| ns4.mercury.net |

I already registered my domain at another company. Can I get continue domain registration with you?
Yes. We can request that your domain registration service be transferred to us, making Mercury Network your single source for all your Internet services. Your domain will be renewed for an additional year when we transfer your domain registration service to Mercury.
I have domain registration service from Mercury Network and received a bill from another company to renew my domain. What is this about?
Your contact information and the date your domain expires is publicly accessible in a “whois” database, as required by regulating organizations. Some domain registration service providers use the information in whois databases to send domain renewal orders to people who are not their customers. Mercury Network does not participate in these unscrupulous tactics. Charges for domain registration and renewal will appear on your regular Mercury Network Billing Statement.
Internet Marketing & Advertising
Can you get my web site to come up in searches?
Yes. Getting your web site to come up in the first page or two of search results can be tricky, but with perseverance, it can be done. Factors that search engines use to determine result placement include meta tags, cross-linking to other web sites, page titles, domain name, and more. We can work with you to do a comprehensive evaluation of your web site’s marketing friendliness and execute a plan to improve your search rank.
What is pay-per-click advertising?
Pay-per-click advertising whereby you are charged for each time someone clicks on your ad. Pay-per-click ads are typically placed at the top and/or sides of search results. You choose what searches your advertising will appear on and the amount you are willing to pay for each click-through. Paying more per-per-click will get you higher on the list of advertisers. Only when someone clicks on your ad do you pay for the advertising.
What are ad impressions?
Impressions are analogous to print distribution. Print distribution tells you how many copies of your ad will be distributed, impressions tell you how many times your ad will be displayed to web site visitors. Some visitors may see your ad once, while others may see your ad multiple times. Web sites that collect visitor demographic information may be able to customize who your ad is displayed to.
Web & E-Mail Hosting
How do I manage my e-mail addresses?
Mailboxes can be added, modified, and removed in the Account Manager at https://accountmanager.mercury.net/ by clicking on the Services tab. There, you can manage all mailboxes on your account. Individual users can modify their own mailbox settings by logging into Mercury Messaging, at http://webmail.mercury.net, with their individual e-mail address and password. These interfaces allow you and your e-mail users to control and manage their own mailboxes, reducing administrative overhead.
How do I manage my web hosting service?
All mailboxes and Standard hosting packages are managed through the on-line Account Manager. Enhanced hosting packages come with WebsiteOS, our enhanced services manager. WebsiteOS gives you complete management capability using a standard web browser and saves you time, money, and resources by transferring site administration to you instead of making you call technical support for every change.
Please explain the term 'server storage'.
Server storage is the amount of disk space on the server that you are allowed to use. All of your web pages, graphics, and log files take up hard drive space and count against the amount of server storage allowed in your plan. Electronic mailbox storage does not count against available server storage. You can see how much server storage you have used in WebsiteOS.
Please explain the term 'data transfer'.
Data transfer measures the amount of pages, graphics, and other downloads that can be transferred from your web site to visitors. If your average web page, including graphics, is 50,000 bytes, and your hosting plan allows 10GB of data transfer a month, you could have approximately 200,000 page views per month and still remain in the transfer amount allowed by your plan. E-mail does not count against available data transfer. You can view your data transfer usage in WebsiteOS.
How do I transfer files to my web site?
You can transfer files to your web site using File Transfer Protocol (FTP), WebsiteOS, or Microsoft FrontPage.
I don’t know how to transfer files. Can you do it for me?
Yes. We provide up to 15 minutes of technician time to transfer your web site to Mercury Network as a courtesy when you sign up. This is enough time to transfer most small-business web sites. If your site utilizes secure certificates, databases, or other advanced features, transferring your web site to Mercury Network will probably take more time than this. Additional technician time for web site maintenance work is billed at $15 every 15 minutes. We give you the tools needed to do all web migration and maintenance work yourself in WebsiteOS. The charge listed above is only for customers who want to utilize our professional services team instead of doing the web site migration themselves.
Can I change plans as my hosting needs change?
Yes. Just call Mercury Network customer service and select your new plan.
Am I charged a fee when I upgrade plans?
No. The only change is the monthly recurring fee to that of the new package.
